Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory Relationship Explained

Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory are two of the figures we see in the Harry Potter series. Although not the main characters, they are important in Harry’s life.

Before she got interested in Harry, Cho was dating Cedric Diggory, who was one of Harry’s Triwizard Tournament opponents and fellow Hogwarts student.

Did Cedric Diggory Have a Crush on Cho Chang?

Cho Chang and Cedric Diggory

We think that Cedric Diggory had a crush on Cho Chang. It is not plainly obvious, but we could read it between the lines.

Cho was Cedric’s partner to the Yule Ball during the Triwizard Tournament. Considering Cho and Cedric were in two different Houses, and different years, Cedric must have liked Cho a lot to pick her from amongst other girls at Hogwarts, from his own year, or even from his own House.

The confirmation that Cedric really liked Cho could be the fact that Cho was picked to be his hostage to rescue during the Second Task of the Triwizard Tournament. It meant that Cho was to Cedric something that he “will sorely miss.”

Although they were not seen together in the corridors at Hogwarts, they were dating for a while, and Cedric took Cho to Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop. Considering how cheesy this place looked to Harry, we can assume that Cedric was very smitten with Cho to take her to a place like that.

Why Did Cedric like Cho Chang?

All of her traits made Cho a perfect girl. The beauty, brains, pleasant character, and interest in sports made Cedric like Cho a lot.

Cho Chang was a beautiful girl. She attracted the attention of the male population at Hogwarts, i.e., Harry Potter, Roger Davies, and Michael Corner. She also attracted Cedric Diggory. That could be why he got interested in Cho in the first place, as we all know that how someone looks will bring others attention.

Cho had a big group of girlfriends with who she was frequently seen in the school corridors. We can assume then that she was friendly and a rather popular girl. From her early encounters with Harry, we can see that she was a pleasant and well-mannered girl.

Cho was witty and intelligent, given her belonging to Ravenclaw. She was learning fast and took pleasure in studying, which we could see in her progress throughout the DA meetings during Harry’s fifth year.

Cho was also interested in sports, supporting a Quidditch team, and playing herself at school. Cho was a Seeker for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, and that’s where we think she met Cedric Diggory, considering that he was a Seeker in the Hufflepuff team as well.

Did Cho Chang Like Cedric Diggory?

There is no mention of Cho’s feelings for Cedric in the books, apart from Hermione’s guessing the reason behind Cho’s constant crying after Cedric’s death. We think, however, that Cho Chang liked Cedric Diggory.

Cedric Diggory was a very handsome young man. He was noticed by many girls from Hogwarts, from Gryffindor (Katie Bell and Alicia Spinnet), Slytherin (Pansy Parkinson), and Ravenclaw (Cho Chang, of course). He was a top student, always well-behaved and modest.

Cedric was picked to be Head Boy, which means he was smart and authoritative. He was also deemed the most worthy student to represent Hogwarts during the Triwizard Tournament. All those traits might have played a role in securing Cho’s affections for Cedric.

Although we don’t know her real feelings for certain, Cho agreed to go to the Yule Ball with Cedric, and she also went with him on at least one date to Madam Puddifut’s Tea Shop. We didn’t see them together at school, but they seemed like rather private people, so they possibly tried to be discreet about their relationship.

Cho was also devastated and depressed after Cedric’s death. She was trying to get closure, but because nobody except Harry knew what really happened, she was miserable almost the entire year. It means that she must have had strong feelings for Cedric to take his death so hard.

How Long Did Cho Date Cedric?

We don’t know how long exactly Cho and Cedric were together, but we can say it was at least seven months from the Yule Ball to Cedric’s death in June.

It is entirely possible that Ceric, like Harry, noticed Cho the previous year (Harry’s third year at school) when she joined her Quidditch team. Cho and Cedric could have been dating for a lot longer than we think, probably before the Triwizard Tournament announcement.

Considering the Harry Potter series presents most scenes from Harry’s perspective, we didn’t see Cedric or Cho a lot before. It could be due to Harry’s troubles and lack of interest in anything other than staying alive.

He noticed Cho and Cedric by themselves, but they were not in the center of his attention. Therefore, whether they were together back then or not slipped Harry’s (and by that also narrator’s) mind.

The end of Cho and Cedric’s relationship was dramatic and abrupt. Cedric’s death on June 24th was something Cho could not move on from for a long time.

Final Thoughts

Cho and Cedric were not a primary couple of the series, but they brought something important. Both Cedric and Cho were popular in their respective Houses, and considering their good looks and intelligence, they could have been a power couple at Hogwarts.

However, Cedric and Cho were rather private people and didn’t want to flaunt their relationship. If not for Cedric’s involvement in the Triwizard Tournament and Harry’s crush on Cho, we are sure we would never hear about them.

Alas, Cedric’s death put all the following events into a spin. It was the beginning of a new era of terror and the end of Cho and Cedric’s relationship, something that could have lasted long years to come.
