Many people compare Hogwarts Houses with each other, and the most popular comparison is Gryffindor and Slytherin.
There is, however, another House, Hufflepuff, that is similar to Gryffindor, and doesn’t get all the attention but is equally essential to the school and the outcome of the wizarding war.
Is Gryffindor Better than Hufflepuff?

The comparison between Houses is rather difficult because each values different character traits. Some people say that overall, Hufflepuffs are better than Gryffindor because they are loyal, friendly, harmless, and cheerful. They always play fair and avoid any conflict at all costs.
Others think that Gryffindors are better than Hufflepuff because they are braver, have their opinions and voice them to others, and are less calculating and more selfless.
We think that each House has something valuable to give, and there is no way to tell that Gryffindor or Hufflepuff is better than others.
It is important to the life of the school to have a mix of characters, and while Gryffindor is always first to open their mouths without thinking, Hufflepuffs have a steady head and can lower the heat down. Hufflepuff and Gryffindor complement each other well if you think about it.
Both Houses have similar traits, like loyalty and passion, but the roots of those traits come from different places, and looking at the student count during the Battle of Hogwarts, we could clearly see that the Hufflepuffs had enough bravery to stay and fight alongside Gryffindors.
Did Hufflepuff Beat Gryffindor?
Hufflepuff House usually stays in the shadows, but during Harry’s years at Hogwarts, Hufflepuffs got their few moments of glory.
House Cup
Unfortunately, as a House full of people who don’t care about competition, House Cup is something Hufflepuffs would probably want if it came about, but are not going to pursue it or get upset if they don’t get it.
As it was, during Harry’s attendance at school, Hufflepuff never won a House Cup. We also don’t have enough information if they ever won the House Cup in Hogwarts history (we would like to think they won at least once since!).
Although there was this one time when Gryffindor almost finished in the last place, at the end of the Sorcerer’s Stone, Hufflepuff had more points than Gryffindor. If Dumbledore didn’t feel like giving more points for Gryffindor last minute, Hufflepuff would have beaten Gryffindor in the House Cup competition. Alas, it was not meant to be.
Quidditch Cup
One of the few moments of fame for Hufflepuffs was when Cedric Diggory caught the Golden Snitch during the Gryffindor-Hufflepuff Quidditch game.
It was Harry’s third year at school, and the conditions were terrible. Additionally, matters got worse when Dementors showed up, causing Harry to lose consciousness and fall of his broom. Before he realized what happened, Cedric caught the Snitch, winning the game for Hufflepuff against Gryffindor and the famous Harry Potter.
Being a true Hufflepuff, Cedric tried to call off the game and have a re-match because he didn’t think Hufflepuff won it fair. It was the only mention in the books of Hufflepuff beating Gryffindor in Quidditch.
How Do You Tell if You Are a Gryffindor or a Hufflepuff?
There are many House Sorting quizzes on the Internet (the Wizarding World included), but a true fan doesn’t need them.
A true fan knows that they are a Hufflepuff if they are loyal and affectionate people who usually get along with and care for others, be it people, animals, or plants. You are a Hufflepuff if you are hard-working but modest. You put your mind to something and work towards your goal without boasting about it and taking a silent prize for what you achieved.
You are a Gryffindor if you display bravery and a can-do attitude. It doesn’t have to be slaying dragons, but even standing up for yourself, taking risks in your life decisions, and never letting your fear show is enough to count yourself as a brave person.
You are a Gryffindor if you are an adventure-loving extrovert, making new friends with ease everywhere you go.
Although those are not the only traits of a true Hufflepuff and a true Gryffindor, those are the most commonly seen. Usually, you should be able to tell the difference if you think of who you really are and what you prefer to do.
We know that Gryffindor is very popular with fans because Harry Potter himself belonged to this House, but like J.K. Rowling said, “don’t diss Hufflepuff!”
Are Gryffindors And Hufflepuffs Friends?
Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs are friends for most of the time. This fact is even mentioned in the Goblet of Fire.
The Hufflepuffs, who were usually on excellent terms with the Gfyrrindors
However, there were a few moments in recent history when we saw Hufflepuffs showing their backs to Gryffindors.
The first time was during Harry’s second year at Hogwarts when everyone thought Harry was the Heir of Slytherin and was hunting Justin Finch-Fletchley. Although Hufflepuffs seemed to avoid Harry rather than confront him, they also apologized quickly when they discovered the truth.
The second time Hufflepuffs were not friendly with Gryffindor (mostly Harry, though) was when Cedric and Harry both gotten into Triwizard Tournament, and Hufflepuffs accused Harry of stealing their only moment of fame. They turned “remarkably cold” toward the whole Gryffindor, and even their Head of House, Professor Sprout, seemed distant and not her usual chatty and pleasant self.
Final Thoughts
People say that Hufflepuffs are the rejects that didn’t fit into any other House, but we know it’s not true. They can be brave and smart, and even cunning if they need to. They resemble Gryffindors a little, but we can’t say if Hufflepuffs are better or worse.
There is not much competition between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff, and even Quidditch games are tame and relaxed. Hufflepuffs are not the lot who want the attention, but they take it when they can.
